Big Relief At Toll Plazas: NHAI Says No Toll Tax After These Many Seconds

The Incoming Good News for Many Commuters Nationwide Is: the Fresh Notification by NHAI for Traffic Operations Enhancement and Decongestion of Toll Plazas. A part of the new notification says that under such a condition, the vehicles shall not pay toll tax if the waiting time exceeds 100 seconds at the toll booth, which benefits thousands of travelers every day, particularly during peak hours and festive days.

New 100 Second Rule Explanation

With the new availing notification of April 2025, each and every toll plaza on the National Highway has to ensure that the waiting time in any toll booth does not exceed 100 seconds (1 minute and 40 seconds). Beyond that, without paying any toll fee, the vehicle shall be passed on.

One would expect it to ease the government’s effort in making “Ease of Commutation” a reality into the physical transport infrastructure. The NHAI has emphasized in no uncertain terms that application observance use will be thoroughly ensured through surveillance systems-placed on busy highways.

Reasons Behind Coming With The Rule

Traffic jams, queues at toll plazas, and divers’ frustration have been there to stress it. Delays in clearance at times do occur due to improper implementation of FASTag for cashless toll payment-wise systems, unorganised lane discipline, and poor vehicle analytics. The new application of the 100-second rule seeks to make the toll operators accountable for rapid clearance at the toll booths.

FASTag Still Stays

While this new regulation shall give relief during the peaks time, FASTag remains compulsory for all vehicles traversing on national highways. Vehicles not availing the FASTag facility shall continue to be levied double the toll. Commuters should maintain their FASTag accounts in an active state with enough money, so there are no delays.

Monitoring & Punishment Dor Toll Operators

To enforce this act, NHAI has set up digital timers and cameras to monitor happenings at the toll plaza. In case the toll operators maintain a record of violating the 100s rule, then they shall also be dealt with accordingly with penalties or suspension of contracts.

Conclusion

This historical step taken by NHAI is expected to drastically bring down the toll waiting time while giving immense comfort to the road users. With the anticipated surge of traffic in the season ahead, this respite comes as happy news for private and commercial drivers alike.
