Cape Town – From May 2025, millions of South Africans suffering under the weight of soaring living costs will finally catch a breather due to the increase of social grants announced by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). Also on Monday, the Department of Social Development confirmed the new payment structure, eligibility criteria, and other vital application details.

It is now reported that all major forms of grants—the Old Age Grants, Disability Grants, Child Support Grants, and Foster Care Grants in their respective categories—would undergo an enormous increase. Here is a look at what grant recipients can anticipate beginning this month:

Revised Grant Amounts To Commence In May 2025

  • Old Age Grant (60 to 74 years): R2,310
  • Old Age Grant (75+ years): R2,330
  • Disability Grant: R2,310
  • Child Support Grant: R560 per child
  • Foster Child Grant: R1,250
  • Care Dependency Grant: R2,310
  • War Veterans Grant: R2,210
  • SRD Grant (R350 Grant): Unchanged at R370

Who qualifies?

To qualify for SASSA grants, applicants should fulfill certain conditions:

  • Currently, a South African citizen, permanent resident, or a recognized refugee
  • Must be within the prescribed income and asset threshold
  • In the case of grants related to disability, medical proof must be submitted
  • If applying for a child-maintained grant, must be the primary caregiver

How To Apply

Applications can be made at any nearby SASSA office or through their [official website](https://www.sassa.gov.za). Required documents include;

  1. South African ID
  2. Proof of income or unemployment
  3. Medical certificates (where applicable)
  4. Birth certificates of children (for child support)

SASSA has permitted individuals who are unable to visit the office physically to send an authorized representative along with a permission letter.
