All this comes as happy news for millions of South Africans as the South African Social Security Agency (`SASSA`) has released the official payment schedule for all grants for May 2025. The grants include Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, and Child Support Grant-these lifelines for vulnerable people across the country.
The Payment Schedule Of May 2025
SASSA has staggered payments over three days in order to avoid crowding. The exact days are as follows:
- Older Persons Grant – Tuesday, 6 May 2025
- Disability Grant – Wednesday, 7 May 2025
- Child Support Grant – Thursday, 8 May 2025
Beneficiaries are advised not to rush into cashing their grants on the first day itself, as their money remains safe far from day one and after.
Increase In Grants Effected April 2025
The increase in grants came into effect following an announcement made by the Minister in the budget last April. The increases are summarized below:
- Older Persons and Disability Grants: Set at R2 315 monthly (an increase of R130)
- Older Persons Grant (75+): Set at R2 335 (an increase of R135)
- Child Support Grants: Increased to R560 (an increase of R30)
- Foster Care Grant: Increased to R1 250
- SRD Grant: Still R370, unchanged
The increases are meant to help low-income households in combating the rising living costs.
Methods of Collections
An elderly grant is collectible by various means:
- Bank Transfer: Directly deposited in the beneficiary’s account.
- Retail Outlets: Shoprite, Pick n-Pay, Boxer, and Usave.
- ATMs: Using the SASSA cards.
SASSA encourages beneficiaries to ensure that their banking details are up-to-date and they do so to prevent any delays in payments.
Launching Of New Biometric Verification
Starting in May 2025, biometrics (fingerprint and face recognition) will be verified for new applications and for applicants who are updating key information as part of SASSA’s new initiative for combating fraud and ensuring bona fide identification of beneficiaries.
