In a much-anticipated advancement, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has increased the Older Persons Grant, often called the Support Grant, by 2025. Beginning from April, eligible elderly persons will be receiving R1,370 per month a significant hike meant to alleviate their financial joists as they’ve existed in this space for over years.
What Is The SASSA Support Grant?
The Older Persons Grant is a monthly financial payment given by SASSA to citizens or permanent residents of South Africa aged 60 years and above, with a view to aid those aged or disabled in supporting themselves after having been left without means of sustaining themselves at all. The grant is also designed as means-tested, thus targeting poor applicants in this scheme.
Payment Structure Change For 2025
From April 2025, the grant has been revised upwards to R1,370 per month, from the previous amount of R1,350. Although it seems little, it is a step in the aim of the government to improve social welfare benefits every year. Then, an increase might build into a second such phase, expected in October 2025, depending upon the economic conditions and inflation trends.
What Is Needed To Be Eligible?
In order to access the grant, the applicant must meet all of the following:
- The age of the applicants should be in excess of sixty years.
- Should be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa.
- The annual income must be less than R96,840 (R8,070 per month for a single applicant).
- If both spouses are married, their combined income should not exceed R193,680 per annum.
- Must not be a recipient of any other social grant in his/her behest.
Procedure To Apply
An application can be made at any SASSA office or online via the official SASSA portal. The necessary documents are
- South African Identity Document,
- Proof of income and assets
- Medical documents, if applicable
- Marriage certificate if married.
For Progress
It is the increase, however, that contributes, while high costs of living and health care are squeezing the elderly. Indeed, the work of SASSA is fast becoming relevant in affording dignity and safety to the aged.
Beneficiaries should always check for any current news, payment dates, or application information on the official SASSA website, or visit their nearest office.
Its not just a financial grant; it is a new commitment towards the welfare of South African elderly.
