In 2025, the South African government spoke to the public with a decree saying that it had to enforce the use of strict new traffic laws to slow down accident rates while improving safety on roads in the country. One important point in the two major amendments was no alcohol will be tolerated for all drivers and secondly, the speeding fine scheme has been restructured for stricter penalties.
Zero Alcohol Policy Now In Force
By July 2025, all South African drivers will have to ensure that they register a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.00% while driving. This means that any indication of alcohol in the system will qualify as illegal intoxication, however trace it may be. Previously, a limit was allowed; however, the restriction now has been stiffened such that there would be no question regarding drinking and driving.
The Penalties For The Infringement Of The New Alcohol Law Include:
- Fines to the amount of: R120,000
- Immediate suspension of license
- Possible criminal record
- Imprisonment in grave/recidivist cases
It is obvious to them that these efforts are for saving lives and preventing injury from driving under the influence of alcohol.
New Speeding Fine Structure
Under the 2025 new laws, speeding fines will differ from previous ones. A system of fines tier according to how many kilometers over the speed limit a person exceeded:
- Up to 10 km/h over: A fine of R500
- 11–30 km/h over: A fine of up to R2,000
- More than 31 km/h over fine From R3,000 and possible license suspension
Repeat offenders may find themselves enrolled in the National Traffic Offences Register (NTOR), causing impediment to license renewals or procuring vehicle insurance.
What To Do, Drivers
To avert unnecessary problems on the road, all bucks are advised to:
- Drinking and driving just don’t mix
- Maintain posted speed limits
- Be conscious while driving through school zones and residential areas
- Look out for new digital cameras and random checks
Know, and drive responsibly in 2025; avoid penalties and protect everyone’s safe passage.
