Train Ticket Booking Rules Changing From May 1: 3 Major Updates You Must Know

Indian Railways will introduce big modifications in train ticket reservation starting from 1st May 2025. All this states the purpose behind conforming to passenger conveniences, cutting misuse of these booking facilities, and promoting digital transaction modes. These new regulations are likely to affect millions of daily users throughout this country. 1. One-Time Password (OTP) For All Booking

The new rule under an initiative against fraudulent booking along with agent misuse will now need passengers to be OTP verified for every ticket booked through IRCTC portal and app. Passengers must verify the mobile number with a one-time password before getting into the payment gateway. This applies to every user along with registered IRCTC users. The reason is to add another level of security by clarifying that a ticket is being booked by a genuine passenger.

2. Advance Reservation Window Reduced From 120 Days To 90 Days

Among the major modifications in advance reservation period is that it would be reduced by 90 days from the current 120 days. As from May 1, passengers will be able to book tickets 90 days before journey, apart from special trains and festivity services. The Railway Board points out that this would enhance the scheduling and utilization of trains while preventing touts or bots from holding tickets.

3. Cancellation Refund Time Reduced To 2 Days

The refund time for ticket cancellations has been decreased, which was earlier expected to take a maximum of up to 5-7 working days for processing. Now, with the upgraded technology and better bank coordination, passengers will receive their refund within 48 hours of cancellation. This rule is applicable for online bookings as well as for counter bookings having a direct link with a bank account.

Reason Behind Changes?

According to railway officials, these are the major enhancements under which cause for reforms with decimalization in the future are planned, as it will now bring greater transparency, security, and efficiency in train travels. Earlier before the system improvements, the Railway Ministry used to receive complaints regarding mess ups in bookings and delays in refunds.
